Sandra Coney

Sandra Coney is an author, journalist, activist on women’s health and executive director of Women’s Health Action Trust. She is the author of The Unfortunate Experiment (1988), Out of the Frying Pan (1990), Hysterectomy (1990) and The Menopause Industry (1993). She has documented an important history of women with Standing in the Sunshine: Centenary of Women’s Suffrage in New Zealand, 1983-1993 (1993). A founding member of the feminist magazine, Broadsheet; she has also been a representative on the expert group advising the New Zealand Ministry of Health.

Sandra has been a local city councillor in the Auckland area of Waitakere since 2001, and served as Deputy Chair of the Parks and Heritage Committee. Sandra is passionate about the long-term protection of the Waitakere Ranges and during her first term was involved in the political liaison group that heard local concerns about the effects of inappropriate development in the ranges. She is the author of History of Piha and the Piha website.
