Join City of Marion Libraries for an evening of unique South Australian stories with authors Mij Tanith, Niki Bonfield and Daniel O’Neil.

Laila’s Story is the new book by Adelaide playwright, teacher and refugee advocate Mij Tanith, who was named City of Adelaide Citizen of the Year in 2025 in recognition of her long-term volunteer work supporting refugees. Laila’s Story documents a year-long community effort – and Mij’s own experience - to support a single Afghan mother and her five daughters living in Iran as they sought safety in Australia. A journey of connection, resilience and unexpected friendship.

Fragmented Yet Whole is a lived-experienced narrative about navigating trauma, identity, and healing from South Australian author and counsellor Niki Bonfield. This poetic and reflective memoir traces the journey of a woman who spent much of her life feeling different, overwhelmed, and unseen, until a late autism diagnosis reframed everything.

All The Dumb Things relates the extraordinary career of soldier, Federal Law Enforcement Officer, security contractor and paramedic Daniel O’Neil. A near death experience in which he touches the other side inspires Daniel to change careers. Changing from war, death and darkness to life and light, Daniel gets more than he originally bargained for. Daniel’s memoir is a raw story of adventure, self-discovery, growth and acceptance and is told with humour, humility and vulnerability.

There will be an opportunity for purchasing the books and a signing with the authors after the talk.

In January 2023, an Afghan man – a long-term refugee living in Australia – walks into the home of two older women in Adelaide. What begins as a simple request for help evolves into a year-long journey of connection, resilience, and unexpected friendship. Through the story of Laila, a single mother with five daughters, and her growing relationship with the author, this work explores the power of human connection across seemingly insurmountable divides of language, culture, age, sexuality, and faith. Laila and her daughters now reside in Australia.
