Women and the Rule of Law

On International Women's Day, 8 March 1997, the International Commission of Jurists hosted a conference at Janet Clarke Hall, Melbourne University. The Commission had been established by lawyers after the Second World War to direct the world's attention to the need to respect, understand and maintain the rule of law as a framework for civilised behaviour.

The purpose of the Melbourne conference, Women and the Rule of Law: Beijing and Beyond, was to direct lawyers' and policy-makers' attention to the need to focus on women's access to justice and, particularly, to bring to the notice of our national government that Australia had made imprtant promises at the fourth World Conference on Women, held at Beijing in September 1995, and that its citizens expected those promises to be kept.
