Radical Reckonings:
Women's Lives, Men's Technologies
Renate Klein
For more than twenty-five years Renate Klein has been debating the uses and misuses of technologies. With a background in neurobiology, she has unpacked mystifying language and challenged doctors and technologists on their ethics and their methodologies. She has written widely on reproductive technologies, hormone replacement therapy, cloning, abortion, and other issues affecting womens health.
Her work in Womens Studies has also been groundbreaking and her writings have influenced students, teachers and researchers around the world. Renate Kleins work engages the reader and her political clarity is refreshing and often irreverent. Radical Reckonings brings together a diverse array of these writings, including feminist theory, activism, womens health, the overuse of anti-depressants and cyberfeminism as well as talks on immigration and population control, the environment, lesbian visibility and womens leadership. Radical Reckonings also includes reflections on living in a number of countries and some excursions into fiction.
Renate Klein was born in Zurich, Switzerland and has degrees from universities in Switzerland, USA and England. She is known internationally for her work on reproductive technologies and womens studies as both a theorist and an activist. She has spoken to parliamentary committees and on TV, radio and print media about ethical issues in reproductive medicine. Her (co)authored/(co)edited books include the international bestseller Test Tube Women (1984), the classic Theories of Women's Studies (1983), The Exploitation of a Desire (1989), Infertility (1989), Radical Voices (1990), Angels of Power (1991), RU 486: Misconceptions, Myths and Morals (1991), Australia for Women: Travel and Culture (1994). She is co-editor with Diane Bell of Radically Speaking: Feminism Reclaimed (1996), and with Susan Hawthorne of CyberFeminism (1999) and of a series of books on the meaning of animals in womens lives. She lives in Australia.
Refreshing, Relentless, Risky the 3 R's never looked so good. Renate Klein's work provides the bedrock for imaging a future free of exploitation and full of dignity. Diane Bell
