What is mythic? / What is true? Asks the opening anonymous poet of this collection. Lesbians have become cultural amphibians. This anthology reflects the varied tongues, the inventiveness of lesbian culture and the diversity of lesbian writing. It explores the mechanics of daily life, the explosiveness of relationships and the geography of love.
Here is toughness, conviction, perseverance and passion, writing which makes a difference.
Contributors include Stella Duffy, Lisa Bellear, Donna Jackson, Gill Hanscombe, Marou Izumo, Helen Hodgamn, Sandra Shotlander, Sue Fitchett, Sandy Jeffs, Marg Vandeleur, Annamarie Jagose, Finola Moorhead, Susan Hampton, Renée, Miriel Lenore and more.
Definitely recommended. Jessica Hubbard, Critic, NZ
It is the sense of place imbued in these pieces which strikes me as being the greatest strength of Car Maintenance, Explosives and Love
these writings
transport the reader from the confines of their chair to whatever locale in which the author has set her work. For this reader at least, those transforming moments are what makes good writing enjoyable. Richard Watts
It engages at once. Some very funny...comment(s) on lesbian culture.
This book has something for everyone and reflects the diversity of lesbian life and experiences.
Michelle Holden, Adelaide Gay Times
These stories, poems, scripts and prose writings show the diversity and extraordinarily rich culture of lesbians. Contributions from well-known as well as new and emerging writers. Among them are Annamarie Jagose, Gillian Hanscombe, Donna Jackson, Ngahuia Te Awekotuku, Jennifer Fulton and Sandy Jeffs.
A poem from the anthology, Unstopped mouths by Susan Hawthorne, is now online at the cyberpoetry site.
Most pieces are about the lesbian experience but the range
is much broader than this suggests . . . bold imagery . . robust and immediate.
- Jean Steel, Write On
Car Maintenance, Explosives and Love and Other Contemporary Lesbian Writings is an anthology of poetry, stories, plays and other writings.
To refer to [Car Maintenance, Explosives and Love] as merely an anthology of lesbian writing is to underrate it. This is a strong and varied collection of writing for women by women . . . Car Maintenance is a richly varied read, and a good laughing point for exploration of contemporary women's writing.
-Suzy Foerster, Australian Book Review
In 1990 Cathie Dunsford and Susan Hawthorne edited The Exploding Frangipani. This anthology introduces new writers and looks again at the explosive and incendiary writing of lesbians.
Reading the collection was like being introduced to a wide range of people and sharing their experiences as well as meeting up with some familiar old friends.
