Some years ago I had watched an extraordinary film called Surname Viet, Given name Nam by a Vietnamese born woman film maker, Trinh T. Minha. Using dance, folk poetry and other art forms from both North and South Vietnam the film had critiqued the Vietnamese society.
The Centre for Women's Studies in Vietnam is located in Hanoi. Set up in 1987 to help the Vietnam Sciences Committee and other concerned offices, it maps out short and long term research programmes for women's problems and helps make the state policies and laws gender just.
