The Association of Women for Action and Research (AWARE), a non-governmental women's organisation has been operating from Singapore since 1985. It promotes empowerment through public education including seminars, workshop and fora; operates a women's Helpline counselling for women in need. It usually publishes its research findings. One of its earliest publications is Singapore Women which analyzes the image of Singapore women over the years. The book also contains a list of publications by women in Singapore and a directory of women's organisations in Singapore. AWARE can be reached at: Block 5 Dover Cresent, #01-22 Tel: +(65)-6779-7137 Another Singapore based group which has brought out some extremely relevant publications is ENGENDER. One of their recent publications is Gender, Poverty and Sustainable Development: Towards a Holistic Framework of Understanding and Action by Vivienne Wee and Noeleen Heyzer. This book looks at the issue of 'feminization of poverty' and examines why 70% of today's absolute poor are women.
