Women and Fisheries Network

    The Women and Fisheries Network was formally constituted at an inaugural meeting in Suva in June 1993. It currently has 52 members in the Pacific region and internationally, and is engaged in research and advocacy work on fisheries and women.

    The goals of the Women and Fisheries Network are to:

ANIMATION
Achieve recognition of the importance of Pacific women's fisheries activities in subsistence communities and in domestic food markets;
Acquire access for Pacific women to fisheries development resources and training;
Seek representation for women in fisheries decision making;
Promote sustainable forms of development in the Pacific; and
Engage in research and analysis on issues concerning fisheries and women.

    The Network invites membership from individuals and groups who are interested in supporting its work or contributing in some way towards advancing women's role in fisheries.

An extremely relevant publication by the Network is Fishing for Answers: Women and Fisheries in the Pacific Islands edited by Elizabeth Matthews. The book has an interesting collection of articles by some of the Network members. The book highlights women's involvement in fishing and addresses the concerns that confront women involved in fisheries. The book will appeal to a wide audience, but in particular to those who are committed to the sustainable development of marine resources.
